Celebrating the reopening of Universal Studios Hollywood with a little sewing project that plays tribute to my favorite Universal Monsters – Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Bride of Frankenstein. This dress is made from a simplicity pattern #1080.
Frankenstein approved!! I can’t tell you how many complements I got on my dress. People were freaking out! Don’t tell the Uni bosses….. but, we did get a little special treatment and got to board the tram tour in the VIP line. YIKES it was so fun! So my advice is stitch up some fandom outfits and you might get a little VIP treatment.
The Universal Monsters fabric is from Robert Kaufman and the pattern is Simplicity 1080.
For the pockets, I used some bat fabric that I had in my stash. I tend to collect Halloween fabrics.
This pattern was great because the ties in the front allow for it to be cinched at the waist. I think it would look great on all different body shapes and sizes.
This pattern calls for lots of bias tape. I had some on hand….. but you can also make your own boas tape. I explain more about using a bias tape maker on my post about sewing masks. In the mask tutorial, I use fabrics strips that are torn on the grain. For this dress, you would need to make strips on the bias.
This pattern also calls for French seams. They are easy to do even if you are a beginner. With French seams…. all you raw edges will be trapped in the seam.
I did alter the sleeves a bit…. I have a very narrow back and this was my first time with this pattern. I felt like my sleeves were slipping a bit so I added some deep pleats to the top of the sleeves.
We visited Universal on a chilly day……as luck would have it, Eddie dropped us off at the Monsters garage. LOL
Delilah and Sophia both sported their Universal Monsters t-shirts. Uncle Steve gave the girls these special shirts for Halloween one year.
