Time for another tee shirt mashup makeover! I’ll be showing you the step-by-step process on how to do a quick t-shirt appliqué. This mash-up is an ice cream dress I made for Delilah. This was the dress that she wore to her Ice Cream Party last year. I’m a little behind on blogging all the arts and crafts that I did since the girls were born so I’m playing catch up with some of my favorite parties and projects.
I started with a hot pink tutu dress that I bought from the thrift shop and an ice cream tee shirt from Gymboree (I think). This tee shirt appliqué technique works with any printed tee shirt.
I used HeatNBond Lite to make the appliqué process easy and pin free. This is a paper backed fusible webbing.
Begin by cutting the front of the tee loose from the back.
Flip the front of the tee over and cut a piece of HeatNBond to fit the design you want to appliqué. For this look, I’m using the two ice cream cones. Make sure your fusible webbing is larger than your design area.
Iron the fusible webbing to the back of the appliqué design. Follow the package instructions. NOTE: you generally don’t use steam with fusible webbing.
Flip the appliqué design to the right side and grab your good sewing scissors.
Cut around the appliqué design. Be sure to leave an edge for sewing. I think around 1/4″ is best.
Position them where you want them on the dress.
Peel the backing from the appliqués.
Position again, with the fusible webbing facing down.
I like to use a pressing cloth for this step. Iron the appliqués to the dress. Be sure to follow the package instructions for time and temp.
Match your thread to the tee shirt color or go with something that is contrasting. Also – Please use a ball point or knit needle.
Straight stitch sew around the appliqué. Back-stitch to secure your threads.

For Sophia’s party look, she wore the tee as purchased. (Well I did add the little flowers) I paired it with a neon orange tutu from Target.
