Make it: Miniature Sponge Cake & Pies for Barbie and Dolls

March 22, 2009 · by: Cathie Filian

WATCH: Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza on the Set of Creative Juice

We are in the kitchen, crafting up some handmade doll food that is sized perfect for Barbie and Blythe Dolls. Learn how to make miniature cakes, pies and more foods.  These may look like the perfect bite-sized portions….. but don’t eat them! The ingredients for these yummy looking foods are select bits and pieces of everyday crafting supplies.

Miniature Sponge Cake Materials:
flat, expandable sponges, yellow and pink
pen
quarter
scissors
Folkart – wicker white paint
craft glue
mini ribbons
mini beads
large button

1. Trace the bottom of a paint bottle onto flat sponges (2 on the yellow and 1 on the pink). Cut out circles and glue the three together with the “icing” (pink) layer in the middle .

2. Cut a small triangle from the circle (this will be a piece of cake). Wet the sponges, let expand and set aside to dry.

3. Paint the top and sides (not the inside) of the cake with white craft paint and let dry. Using glue, attach ribbon (frosting) around the outer edge and glue beads in a daisy pattern to the top of the cake.

Miniature Pie Materials:
bottle caps
tan felt
red seed beads (or color to match fruit of choice)
Quick Hold craft glue

1. Cut a thin strip of tan felt to fit the inside rim of the bottle cap and glue in place.

2. Put a small amount of glue on the inside bottom of the cap, fill cap with seed beads and cover with glue.

3. Cut very thin strips of tan felt; crisscross felt strips over the beads to form a woven crust.

Oh, yay! I love miniatures, and these are great… it’s a trick of looking at things a little differently.

If you want to do this stuff with polymer clay, consider checking out Angie Scarr’s work (if you haven’t before) — it’s amazing.

It’s such a fun way to create a custom pattern on any denim clothing. I’m doing a jean jacket, but you do you….this works with jeans cut off whatever you want. for the appliqué I’m cutting out a design from a thrift shop hoodie and I use some iron on webbing just to secure that in place and then I sewed around the design with the machine, but you could of course just do a little hand stitch as well. I love how this turned out and I love making DIY looks for myself and the girls.

DIY Purse Chains and Charms from Toys! I made this DIY Purse Chains and Charms from Toys! I made this for a special table-read visit to Bob’s Burgers! 🎉 wWhen I got invited… I knew I had to craft something to wear! I got the Louise doll at Five Below!

These purse charms are easy to make with small toys. A few tips!

Use beading wire and not stretchy cord. This helps with durability.

When drilling toys, use a drillbit that is slightly smaller than your eye screw. Add a drop of clue if you would like to have a little extra security.

I like to add jump rings to the ends of my chains, so I can easily take them on and off purses.
