Handmade Day of The Dead Celebration + Painted Picado Banner

October 18, 2018 · by: Cathie Filian

Create a vibrant and fun Handmade Day of the Dead family celebration set. We used FolkArt Multi-surface paints, Day of the Dead Fabrics, Fabric Mod Podge and embellishments.

Hand-painted Margarita Pitcher

Handprinted Margarita Pitcher and Mason Jar Glasses

What you need: Glass Pitcher, Drinking Mason Jars, Rubbing alcohol, Detail paintbrush, Sponcers, FolkArt Multi Surface Paints

Instructions:

To create the flowers, we used Spouncer foam paint daubers to create circles that formed the flower shapes. Keeping with the hand-painted look of Day of the Dead items we overlapped colors and kept the design more organic. Clean the pitcher with rubbing alcohol so the paint sticks.

Create a flower by dipping one size of a Spouncer into the paint colors of choice. Tap off the excess and stamp onto the glass in a circle pattern of 5 dots. Repeat with the different color in the center.

Add more painted details by over lapping large and small dots to the flower designs.
Allow to dry and heat set per the bottle instructions.

Painted Picado Banner

What you need: Fabric Scraps, Wax paper, Stencil paintbrush, Ribbon, Hot glue, Gems, Gem glue,, FolkArt Multi-surface paint-Black

Instructions

Cut or tear the fabric into 12×8.5 inch pieces. You will need 1 per flag. Bright and pastel colors work the best.

Place a flag on a piece of wax paper. Position the large circle in the center of a flag. Dip your stencil paintbrush into the Pure Black paint, tap of excess and paint around the edge of the stencil with and up-and-down motion. Fill in the center of the stencil. Repeat with the small strip of circles on the left and right side of the center. Allow the paint to dry. Repeat for each flag that you wish to make.
Glue gems to the center of the circles.

Cut a piece of ribbon or twine that will be long enough to fit each of the flags plus an extra 2 yards to hanging and tying. Hot glue the flags to across the top to the ribbon. Begin in the center and work your way to each side. Leave about a fingers width between each of the flags.

Party Favor Boxes

Papier-mâché gift box, Foam paintbrush, Scissors, Day of the Dead fabric, Gems, Gem glue, Flower trim, hot glue, FolkArt Paints, Mod Melt Embellishments

Instructions

Paint the base of the box with Parisian Pink and the lid with Pure Black. Use two coats for complete coverage. Top-coat with Mod Podge Hard-coat.

Cut a skull motif from the fabric. Coat the back of the fabric with Mod Podge Fabric, position onto the box and smooth with your fingers. Add glitter dots by pooling Mod Podge extreme glitter in random areas.

Create a Mod Melt flower by heating a Mod Melt stick in a high temp glue gun, fill a mold with the Mod Melt, allow to cool, remove from the mold and paint with FolkArt Lemonade paint. Top-coat the Mod Melts with Mod Podge Hardcoat. Once dry, glue a gem to the centers of the flower.
Hot glue the flower to the top of the box. Holt glue trim around the lid of the box. Use gem glue to attach rhinestones around the box.

Day of the Dead Candle Centerpiece

What you need: Scissors, Day of the Dead fabric, Foam paintbrush, Fabric Mod Podge, 3 Glass candles, Gems, Gem glue, E6000 glue, trim, Hot glue 3 Glass candle holders, Rubbing alcohol, Med flat paintbrush, Mod Melt Embellishments

Instructions

Cut a skull motifs from the fabric. We used 4 skulls for each candle. Coat the back of the fabric with Mod Podge Fabric, position onto the candle and smooth with your fingers. Topcoat with more Mod Podge. Glue gems to the eyes.

Create a cluster of Mod Melt flowers and leaves by heating a Mod Melt stick in a high temp glue gun, fill a mold with the Mod Melt, allow to cool, remove from the mold and paint with FolkArt paint. Top-coat the Mod Melts with Mod Podge Hardcoat. Glue gems to the center where you wish. Glue to the glass candle with E6000 glue.

Hot glue trim around the neck of the candle.

Clean the glass candleholders with alcohol. This helps the paint stick. Paint the center section of each glass stem with a different color of Folkart Enamels paint. Allow to dry per the bottle instructions.

Day of the Dead Cheese Plate and Placemat

What you need: Glass cheese plate, Foam paintbrush, Scissors, Mod Podge Fabric, Day of the Dead fabric, Detail paintbrush, Hot glue, Placemat, Mod Melt Embellishments

Instructions

Cheese Plate
Cut the fabric so that it is slightly larger than the place size.

Coat the back of the plate with a thick coat of fabric Mod Podge. Position the fabric (right-side towards the Mod Podge) onto the back of the plate. Smooth with your fingers. Coat the back of the fabric on the plate with a layer of Fabric Mod Podge. Allow to dry.

Use scissors to trim the excess fabric from around the edges.

Hand wash by wiping the top with a wet cloth. Don’t submerge in water. To remove the fabric and make a different design, soak the plate overnight in soapy water.

Placemat
Cut a skull motifs from the fabric. We used 8 skulls for around the edge and 4 for the center. Coat the back of the fabric with Mod Podge Fabric, position onto the placemat and smooth with your fingers. Topcoat with more Mod Podge.

Add glitter dots by pooling Mod Podge extreme glitter in random areas.

Create 8 Mod Melt flowers by heating a Mod Melt stick in a high temp glue gun, fill a mold with the Mod Melt, allow to cool, remove from the mold and paint with FolkArt paint. Top-coat the Mod Melts with Mod Podge Hardcoat. Add glitter with Mod Podge extreme glitter.

Hot glue the flowers around the placemat in between the skulls.

It’s such a fun way to create a custom pattern on any denim clothing. I’m doing a jean jacket, but you do you….this works with jeans cut off whatever you want. for the appliqué I’m cutting out a design from a thrift shop hoodie and I use some iron on webbing just to secure that in place and then I sewed around the design with the machine, but you could of course just do a little hand stitch as well. I love how this turned out and I love making DIY looks for myself and the girls.

These purse charms are easy to make with small toys. A few tips!

Use beading wire and not stretchy cord. This helps with durability.

When drilling toys, use a drillbit that is slightly smaller than your eye screw. Add a drop of clue if you would like to have a little extra security.

I like to add jump rings to the ends of my chains, so I can easily take them on and off purses.
